The main purpose of this blog is to put forward comments on issues in the Borough that I find of particular interest, with an emphasis on issues and events in St Peters Ward, where I live, and which is the ward I have been elected to represent. It is true that this blog does not always receive as much attention as it might.
I was elected as a Councillor for St Peters Ward in 2006, and have been a Councillor continuously since that time. I was chair of the Health and Care Scrutiny from 2009 until 2018, which gave me the opportunity to turn the spotlight on the accountability of Health and Care services in Islington.
Since May 2018 I have been Chair of the Planning Committee, following Robert Khan's decision not to re-stand in Bunhill Ward. I feel strongly that I am carrying forward the legacy of Robert's chairing of the committee, being similarly committed to values of openness, fairness and transparency in all planning matters. I continue to apply these values as far as possible, although this becoming increasingly difficult in the face the government's continued attacks on the power of local authorities to determine planning matters democratically at a local level.
I continue to enjoy my involvement in more borough-wide issues, but my first priority (and for which I was elected) remains my Ward, and my constituents.
Labour Councillor for St Peters Ward. First elected May 2006 along with the late Cllr Gary Doolan. Our 2006 election unseated all three Lib-Dem Councillors, including the then Leader of the Council, whose name we shall not mention. We were successfully re-elected in 2010 with a much increased majority. We were joined in 2011 by Alice Perry, who was elected with a 52% majority. We have since been re-elected again in 2014 and 2018, with a phenomenal absolute majority in St Peters ward, a part of a victory that has seen Labour take 47 of the 48 seats on the Council, and has lead to the Borough being compared unfavourably to North Korea by one grumpy LibDem ex-Councillor who didn't expect to lose his seat.
